THE CONSUMER!In this world today, you and I are not people; we are just consumers to those who use us as a means to enrich themselves. Higher education, particularly in business, is helping fuel a culture of greed. The Corporate motto of this new century is very simple: “Get all that you can, any way you can, as fast as you can.” So clearly, Herbert Armstrong was correct in his view of modern higher education.
If you personally are not a believer yet, then please read on. The largest meltdown since the Great Depression is directly linked to the aforementioned motto. Individuals who held the highest attainable credentials from the most respected educational institutions are the ones responsible for the pain suffered by billions of law abiding citizens around the world. Yet these individuals claim almost in unison that it was all someone else’s fault, while also claiming huge bonuses for destroying the economies of the entire earth. And then to add insult to injury, government, thus far, has given a pass to all but a few low level executives.
We consumers were the only innocent ones, along with a handful of authorities whose calls of caution were unheeded. We trusted that highly educated people in business and government had our best interest at heart. After all, wonderful visions like that of home ownership were finally achievable with low interest and relaxed rules for qualification for loans. Average consumers were convinced that the price of a home would continue to rise, and therefore, were encouraged to buy a home as soon as possible, even if it required an interest only loan! Why did anyone believe that? Because the smartest people in the world were feeding the average citizen this crock! The truth is that overeducated people in business and in government were complicit in designing the entire debacle for their own personal gain, knowing that the average benevolent taxpayer was simply not able to understand the complex connections involved. The “too big to fail” corporations are financially linked to governmental leadership, and it is their money that dictates public policy and who will win an election campaign.
So now the consumer is being consumed by the greed of a very few elite individuals at the top of the food chain. Everyone wanted to believe that Enron (and their accounting firm) was just a fluke, but we were wrong, as we saw their same practices at play in mortgage backed securities. Higher education is teaching that the individual person and the entire resources of the planet are there for the smartest people to consume at will.
I think I read in my Bible that God is going to hurt those who hurt the earth, as well as those who exploit the little people whose only wish is to preserve posterity for future generations. The earth is able to “vomit out its inhabitants”, and that is about to happen in earnest, as the earth rebels against the perpetrators of greed. We are privileged to have lived in the final era of man’s misrule, and perhaps witness the beginning of a new age where a righteous new leader will consume those who view their neighbor and the earth itself only as a means to enrich themselves. |
